INT/EXT. TO BE DETERMINED - DAY
Brian, 50-ish, stares at the White Sands selfie on Barbara's phone..
BRIAN: What can you tell me about how Tom and Olivia came together?
He hands her the phone, she sets it down.
BARBARA: Well, Hunter called it a one-night stand. The details of which I've been trying to remember. The basics are that they met in a casino, hit it off well enough to make a date for a drive around Lake Tahoe the next day.
BRIAN: What were they doing in Reno?
BARBARA: Tom had finished work on a ranch in another part of the state and was in Reno for the rodeo before heading on to Mexico for work on another ranch.
BRIAN: A cowboy.
BARBARA: Retired ranch foreman. Olivia was an actress and in town to audition for a play at the Pioneer Theatre. The King and I. She was a singer and dancer, too.
BRIAN: How was your relationship withn her?
BARBARA: I loved Olivia. Mom and dad loved her. She was wonderful.
She seems captured by reverie.
BRIAN: A drive around Lake Tahoe.
Snapped out of it, she smiles. Brian takes her hand.
BARBARA: Hunter has a selfie she took of them at Zephyr Cove. A fire near Spooner Lake redirected their way back to Reno through Carson City, where they had dinner, danced and ended up spending the night in what was then called The Pony Express Hotel.
BRIAN: Ages?
BARBARA: Olivia was twenty-two. Olivia had just gotten her theatre degree from Cal State Fullerton. Tom, we know now, was twenty-seven. They had breakfast the next morning, drove back to Reno, Tom dropped her off and continued on to Mexico.
BRIAN: No exchange of information.
BARBARA: Not that I'm aware of.
BRIAN: No birth control.
BARBARA: Olivia used a diaphragm. Ninety-four percent success rate.
She smiles.
BRIAN: What?
BARBARA: I'm remembering Hunter telling me that's why he wore number six in high school baseball.
Brian grins.
BRIAN: What position?
BARBARA: A few positions. He pitched a year at a junior college in Orange County.
Her PHONE BEEPS. She picks up and stares at the screen.
BARBARA (cont.): Another one.
She hands him the phone. Chloe's selfie includes Hunter, Jackie and Tom at the Sierra Blanca Viewpoint.
BRIAN: I reckon cowboy alright.
BARBARA: Jackie's pretty. Isn't she.
BRIAN: She is. How are you folks with this?
BARBARA: Protective of Chloe first. Chloe's report alleviated initial anxiety. I think. Happy for Hunter. Assuming.
BRIAN: My dad finished Foglost.
BARBARA: And.
BRIAN: Does or did Hunter drink?
BARBARA: Did.
BRIAN: He looks fit.
BARBARA: He's come a long way. Ready?
Brian nods.
