Silly Interlude Sarah meeting dreams

These two dreams a few years ago, and back-to-back nights.

In both I am seated at an outside table of what I'll call a cafe, but I don't really know. Daytime. Same place both times and I'm reminded of a place on Melrose where Kristie and I went to a couple few times early in our relationship.

But no matter.

I'm at same place in both dreams in which Sarah shows up for the meeting we've arranged. I have the beard I used to have but Sarah recognizes me.

A Meeting. Our Meeting. Clearly about my screenplay.

Both dreams end as she arrives and is about to sit down.

Sarah is someone I know in "The Industry" to whom I will send the link to the Final Draft blog of this screenplay, which I'll start next week.

Other titles: Coming to Meet, The Symbol of Meeting

Hilary Barrett:

" 'Coupling' means meeting, and also a woman who gives birth to the heir – the powerful woman. She represents someone (of either sex) or something with a profound and mysterious power to attract you, to take over, and to change everything. She moves you, re-energizes and gives birth to new life."

Hilary Barrett:

'Nearing' means drawing closer and gazing down over what you approach. There are two strands of meaning here: the approach of a greater spirit or presence in an ongoing process of growth, and your approach as the one who pays attention and takes responsibility. Like the creative drive of Hexagram 1, this great, growing energy comes from the source, asks for your full participation, and seeks to reach fruition and be realized. But its surging growth can be disastrously interrupted by 'reaching an end in the eighth month'.

The eighth month is the month of harvest. If this comes round too soon for what Nears to reach full growth – if the situation demands that you produce a tangible result prematurely – then this means misfortune. Or if you focus exclusively on results instead of watching patiently over developments – if your expectations are out of touch with the pace of growth – then there is misfortune.

Having something to show for a process of growth doesn't mean you've arrived at its outcome: harvest is not the end. As each harvest is gathered in and stored, the seasonal cycle of growth continues; you need to stay present to its ongoing changes, wherever they might lead.

Fort Park in progress

EXT PARKLIKE SETTING AMONG OAK TREES - DAY

Grey sky, strong breeze Lean-to with fire pit, archery target, horseshoe area, tire swing via rope and tree limb, picnic table, the boys and an ATV at a treehouse in progress. They converse and point at the early framing, Hunter and Gil sit with bottles Victorie beers in hand on a bench aimed at a vista to the hills and mesas of the surrounding land, ATV parked nearby where a trail down the hillside, near where FORT PARK has been neatly carved into a tree and painted army green.

HUNTER: Where does the trail go?

GIL: Downhill to the creek.

HUNTER: Where does the creek go.

GIL: North Prong Medina River, when there's enough water in it. This storm will do that.

HUNTER: How long have you been here?

GIL: All my life. My dad and his brothers bought the first parcel and started their construction company with their G-I bills.

HUNTER: My grandfather used his to go to school.

GIL: Where did he serve?

HUNTER: Pacific, Navy.

GIL: My dad and his brother Bobby were there with the Marines. Their brothers Rod and Ernie were Army in Europe.

HUNTER: They all came back.

GIL: Bobby did not. Killed on Okinawa. He was the oldest, then dad, then Ernie, then Rod. Anyway, the business did well, Soledad was born, me two year later, dad bought the first parcel, started work on the house. We'd come up from San Antonio when dad wasn't working, camp out, go hunting, work on the house, go tubing. That's how we met the Walker family.

HUNTER: Ruth told me. Will the boys be in the military?

GIL: Good question. You ever?

HUNTER: No.

Lull.

HUNTER (cont.): Tom had a tattoo.

GIL: I have the same one, same place.

(G. Shows First Cavalry tat.)

(cont.) Same night in Bangkok. Did he talk about it?

HUNTER: No. I saw it when I found him in bed.

GIL: Did you talk about Vietnam?

Hunter shakes his head.

HUNTER: I was going to ask about it later. Would you be willing to talk about it?

GIL: We can do that.

HUNTER: Thank you.

GIL: Maybe when you're back next week.

HUNTER: I'd like that.

GIL: I've got pictures.

HUNTER: I'd love to see them. Drafted or enlisted?

GIL: Enlisted. Knew we'd be drafted so figured why not have a say in what we'd be doing. Signed on for what was called the buddy program. Did basic together at Fort Polk, Lousiana, A-I-T together, landed in Danang on the same plane, got split up pretty quickly thereafter at the replacement depot.

DISTANT THUNDER.

Barb and Brian 1: final form 1

INT/EXT. TO BE DETERMINED - DAY

Brian, 50-ish, stares at the White Sands selfie on Barbara's phone..

BRIAN: What can you tell me about how Tom and Olivia came together?

He hands her the phone, she sets it down.

BARBARA: Well, Hunter called it a one-night stand. The details of which I've been trying to remember. The basics are that they met in a casino, hit it off well enough to make a date for a drive around Lake Tahoe the next day.

BRIAN: What were they doing in Reno?

BARBARA: Tom had finished work on a ranch in another part of the state and was in Reno for the rodeo before heading on to Mexico for work on another ranch.

BRIAN: A cowboy.

BARBARA: Retired ranch foreman. Olivia was an actress and in town to audition for a play at the Pioneer Theatre. The King and I. She was a singer and dancer, too.

BRIAN: How was your relationship withn her?

BARBARA: I loved Olivia. Mom and dad loved her. She was wonderful.

She seems captured by reverie.

BRIAN: A drive around Lake Tahoe.

Snapped out of it, she smiles. Brian takes her hand.

BARBARA: Hunter has a selfie she took of them at Zephyr Cove. A fire near Spooner Lake redirected their way back to Reno through Carson City, where they had dinner, danced and ended up spending the night in what was then called The Pony Express Hotel.

BRIAN: Ages?

BARBARA: Olivia was twenty-two. Olivia had just gotten her theatre degree from Cal State Fullerton. Tom, we know now, was twenty-seven. They had breakfast the next morning, drove back to Reno, Tom dropped her off and continued on to Mexico.

BRIAN: No exchange of information.

BARBARA: Not that I'm aware of.

BRIAN: No birth control.

BARBARA: Olivia used a diaphragm. Ninety-four percent success rate.

She smiles.

BRIAN: What?

BARBARA: I'm remembering Hunter telling me that's why he wore number six in high school baseball.

Brian grins.

BRIAN: What position?

BARBARA: A few positions. He pitched a year at a junior college in Orange County.

Her PHONE BEEPS. She picks up and stares at the screen.

BARBARA (cont.): Another one.

She hands him the phone. Chloe's selfie includes Hunter, Jackie and Tom at the Sierra Blanca Viewpoint.

BRIAN: I reckon cowboy alright.

BARBARA: Jackie's pretty. Isn't she.

BRIAN: She is. How are you folks with this?

BARBARA: Protective of Chloe first. Chloe's report alleviated initial anxiety. I think. Happy for Hunter. Assuming.

BRIAN: My dad finished Foglost.

BARBARA: And.

BRIAN: Does or did Hunter drink?

BARBARA: Did.

BRIAN: He looks fit.

BARBARA: He's come a long way. Ready?

Brian nods.

mountain meadow 1: Hunter and Tom

Horseback, side by side, trailing Jackie and Chloe, who trail Sess and Claire.

TOM: How often do you get to see Chloe?

HUNTER: Her spring breaks, the last few weeks of her summer vacation, every other birthday weekend and whenever I'm in L-A .

TOM: You and Barbara on good terms?

HUNTER: We are. We talk at least once a week.

TOM: What does she do for a living?

HUNTER: She's a photographer. We met at the same newspaper we worked for.

TOM: Are her parents livin'?

HUNTER: They are. Jan and John. Retired attorneys in Paso Robles.

TOM: Well that ain't too far from San Luis Obispo, is it?

HUNTER: Half-hour drive, and there's a train. Ever been in the area?

TOM: Closest was Pismo Beach 'bout a thousand years ago.

HUNTER: What were you doing in Pismo Beach a thousand years ago.

TOM: Knew a fella who got me a job doin' some wranglin' work on a movie.

 HUNTER: Really?

TOM: Yessir.

HUNTER: What movie?

TOM:  It was called Cattle Creek, a western.

HUNTER: I don't know that one.

TOM: Never got released. Heck, didn't even really get finished far as I remember. Ran outta money. But it was a good time in the six weeks it lasted. Anyway, me and this fella, Mike Lawler, drove up in his Impala and stayed a few days. Did some deep sea fishin'.

HUNTER: Catch anything.

TOM: Halibut, rock cod. Ever do any fishin'?

HUNTER: No. Do you still fish?

TOM: I do. Got some good trout water near home and me and a friend'll take his boat out on Medina Lake when we're at Ruth's.

HUNTER: Fly fishing for trout?

TOM: Yessir.

HUNTER: Who taught you to tie and cast a fly?

TOM: My grandad. Dad's father, Willie. He had a friend with some Guadalupe river frontage. Think you might be up for fishin' sometime?

HUNTER: Yes. I would.

TOM: Well then we will.

HUNTER: Alright.

meet Barbara, John and Jan

EXT. CAFE PATIO - DAY

Barbara, 50-ish John and Jan, mid-70s..

JOHN: Do we know where exactly they're riding horses.

BARBARA: North of Ruidoso, end quote. Jackie's family has land and her cousin manages one of the stables in the area.

JAN: Do we know what Jackie does for a living?

BARBARA: History professor at New Mexico State. From whom Chloe received a letter last week.

JOHN: Speaking of which, are she and Hunter going to meet the Arizona coach?

BARBARA: No. Just walk the campus, check out Tucson.

Jackie's PHONE RINGTONES TYPEWRITER CLATTER. She picks up after the ZING OF RETURN.

BARBARA (cont.): Hey.

(Her face expresses surprise as she listens.)

Hunter, I trust your judgment.

They're right here.

Okay.

You or Chloe take a picture, okay?

Can't wait.

Bye.

(She pockets phone.)

JOHN: Take a picture of what?

BARBARA: Whom, dad. Tom Walker from Texas is at Hunter's house. He's spending the night and leaving in the morning. Chloe will call tonight.

They look at each other. WAITER arrives.

Tom calls Wanda and Ruth, meet Daisy

Tom calls Ruth with Gil in Fredericksburg with peaches.

GIL: Hijole.

Howdy finalish form

EXT. HUNTER'S FRONT PORCH - DAY

Tom has made the U-turn back to Hunter's house, rung the doorbell. Hunter, after his double-take through door's peep-hole, has opened the door just enough to peer out at Tom.

HUNTER: Can I help you?

TOM: Howdy. My name is Tom Walker.

Hunter sizes him up and down, looks past him to the truck parked on the street near the bin.

HUNTER: Tom Walker from Texas who was in Reno for the rodeo fifty-two years ago?

TOM: Well, one of 'em anyway.

HUNTER: What's my mother's name?

TOM: Olivia, if I have the right Hunter Hardyn.

HUNTER: How did you find out about me?

TOM: Went online to do a search for uour mother. Found her obituary. Seen she was survived by you, and your daughter. Went online, looked ya up, found your wiki page, seen your date a birth. Did the math.

HUNTER: When was this?

TOM: It'll be eight years the second a November.

HUNTER: Just happen to be in the neighborhood?

TOM: Sorta. Passin' through on my way to Texas.

HUNTER: Passing through from where, if you don't mind me asking.

TOM:  You can ask me anything ya want. On my way to my sister's house from where I live with my wife in Laramie, Wyomin'.

HUNTER: You found my address online?

TOM: Yessir. Paid a few dollars for a search.

HUNTER: What if I didn't know who you are?

TOM: I'da been a little turned around and askin' for directions to Drippin' Springs Road.

HUNTER: I'm out the door on my way to the airport in El Paso to pick up my daughter.

TOM: Yessir.

HUNTER: You'll be passing back through on your way to Laramie?

TOM: Yessir, in a week or so.

HUNTER: We won't be in here in a week.

TOM: Yessir.

Hunter surveys Tom, finally opens the door wider, motions Tom in. Tom removes his hat, enters. Hunter stares at the truck, closes the door.

Scene 1 Final

INT. BEDROOM - NIGHT

TOM and WANDA, mid-70s, sit up in bed, under the covers, in pajamas, reading. Both wear glasses. Curtains closed across the window above the headboard. Lamp, eyeglass case and phone on their respective nightstands. Wanda peruses a Hawaiian Travel brochure. Tom is reading a grey hardcover book we can see is titled Foglost and written by H.C. Hardyn. His wedding band is gold, her diamond-on-silver modest.

WANDA: Should we do a luau?

TOM: Well, what is it they say about when you're in Rome?

WANDA: Do as the Romans do.

TOM: Heck, I'm halfway thinkin' about takin' a surfin' lesson.

WANDA: Now that's some halfway thinking alright.

TOM: You think this ol' dog ain't got one more trick in him?

WANDA: I'd pay to see it.

TOM: Won't have to. Got 'em down the beach from our hotel. You just pull up under an umbrella with your Mai Tai, stick your toes in the sand and watch me hang ten.

Pause. Tom turns a page.

WANDA: Hmm. Maybe I'll take a hula lesson.

TOM: You know I'll be front and center for that.

Wanda does a hula dance move with her arms and hands. Tom smiles.

TOM (cont.): So whaddaya reckon the chances are we'll get lei'd.

Wanda, shocked, sets down the brochure, stares at Tom, who finally looks at her.

WANDA: Thomas Travis Walker, my goodness gracious.

TOM: What? Ain't that what they call them flower necklaces they put around your neck when ya get off the plane. A lei?

She shakes her head.

WANDA: Yes, that's what they're called. But I'm not sure our airline does that.

TOM: Oh.

She returns her attention to the brochure, Tom his to the book.

WANDA: However I feel there's a good chance we will when we get to our hotel.

Tom looks at her, closes book. She looks at him, winks. He smiles. She puts brochure on her nightstand, Tom sets the book on his. Each reaches for and turns off their lamp at the same time.

Backpack slung over a shoulder. Hunter's sunglasses atop a fishing cap, raglan-style tee with sleeves a different color than the body. Tom is cowboy per usual. He follows Chloe toward the truck. Hunter gets in the Range Rover, backs it to the street.

CHLOE: Cool two-tone.

TOM: Ain't the original paint but it's the same colors.

Tom fishes key from pants pocket.

CHLOE: What year model?

He opens the driver's door.

CHLOE: Did you buy it new?

He gets sunglasses from visor sleeve.

TOM: No. My dad did. This was his last truck

Hunter parks on the street, gets out, approaches Tom and Chloe.

Hunter winks.

TOM: Yessir, I reckon it woulda.

CHLOE: This was Dale's last truck.

HUNTER: Really?

TOM: Yessir. Paid cash for it and drove it off the lot in Fort Worth on his way back home with friends from a Cowboys game.

CHLOE: Yonder comes a car.

Tom and Hunter turn to see the nearing car coming from the direction Tom had. Its form suggests convertible.

HUNTER: Heeere's Jackie.

rewriting re finding Final Form

Hilary Barrett:

"Subtly penetrating means becoming part of something, or someone. You penetrate subtly by feeling your way into things, yielding gently to their nature. You shift your own ideas and expectations, and come to understand the situation from inside, on its own terms. And so, as you allow things to shape you, you also reach a place where you can shape them. The old Chinese character for 'Subtly Penetrating' shows a stand bearing the official seals a ruler would bestow on those he trusted. Someone who bows down and accepts a seal is submitting to the order of things, entering in and receiving his place within it. Then his seal, sign of personal authenticity, endows him with influence and the power to 'make his mark'."

about Ruth

Chloe with Barbara, Jan and John.

JAN: What do we know about Ruth?

CHLOE: We know she was a high school teacher in Johnson City, Texas, then a junior high administrator in Tulsa, where she met her husband, Ed, who was a petroleum engineer. She was thirty when they married. They had a son, Charles. Ed and Charles died on Charles's fifteenth birthday when their Cessna crashed on the landing strip of a ranch they'd flown to for a deer hunt. Ruth sold their house and traveled in Europe for a year, lived in Maine for two years then moved to Bandera when their mother, Opal, was diagnosed with breast cancer. She died five months later. Their father, Randy, died from a heart attack a year and a day later. Ruth moved to Alaska, lived there for three years, then bought the house in Kerrville. No relationships after Ed that Tom knew of. She started painting a few years ago. The pictures on his phone indicate a very quick learner.

meet Barbara, Jan and John dialogue

PLAYING SCRABBLE.

JOHN: Do we know where they're going horseback riding?

BARBARA: Jackie's family has land north of Ruidoso. She has a cousin who manages a riding stable.

JAN: Do we know what Jackie does for a living?

BARBARA: History professor at New Mexico State. From whom, by the way, Chloe received a letter last week.

JOHN: Do we know if Chloe is meeting an Arizona coach, by the way.

BARBARA: She is not. They're going to walk the campus, hang out in Tucson for a couple days.
